Information sessions on illegal logging
The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) will hold information sessions in capital cities and regional centres across Australia to outline the Illegal Logging Prohibition Amendment Regulation 2013. DAFF officers will meet with state government officials as well as timber importers, brokers and processors in the states and territories between July and September 2013.
The information sessions will provide Australian forestry industry stakeholders with the opportunity to learn about the regulations, which come into effect from 30 November 2014. Importers and processors will be informed of the need to undertake “due diligence” to minimise the risk of importing or processing illegally harvested timber or timber products that are regulated.
DAFF will meet with New South Wales state government representatives and hold an information session for importers and brokers in Sydney on 23 July. This will be followed by information sessions for domestic processors, importers and brokers in Victoria from 6 to 9 August.
Sessions will also be held in Tasmania (Hobart and Launceston), South Australia (Adelaide and Mt Gambier) and Western Australia (Perth and Bunbury) in mid-late August, and in Queensland, Northern Territory and regional New South Wales in September.
Updated information on specific dates and venues will be listed on our website (www.daff.gov.au/illegallogging) once sessions are confirmed. The itinerary is designed to ensure that the majority of Australia’s domestic timber importers and processors will have the opportunity to attend a session. As noted in previous emails, DAFF would be grateful for any industry assistance in helping to promote these sessions.
Once country and state specific guidance materials are developed further, DAFF will conduct an educational outreach program in early to mid-2014.
